"He made things difficult." —PSG Captain Marquinhos singles out Chelsea star as the toughest he encountered during Club World Cup Final tie.

PSG Captain Marquinhos has named his strongest opponent in the Club World Cup final tie.

After a brutal 3–0 defeat in the Club World Cup final, PSG captain Marquinhos didn’t hide behind excuses.

While most of the spotlight went to Chelsea’s Cole Palmer and Golden Glove winner Robert Sánchez, Marquinhos turned the focus inward — admitting Chelsea were simply the better team on the night and named one special Chelsea star in praise as the toughest opponent he encountered.

In the eyes of PSG captain Marquinhos, the toughest man on the pitch wasn’t necessarily the flashiest — it was João Pedro.

And this wasn’t a new opinion. Marquinhos had his eye on Pedro before the first whistle blew.

Liam Delap and Marquinhos

In the pre-match press conference, Marquinhos singled out Chelsea’s Brazilian forward as a serious threat to PSG’s backline.

Marquinhos said via PSG’s official X account: “I already knew about the qualities of Joao Pedro, and he has had a chance to show that at Chelsea already because of the tournament that he is having. He is showing his qualities even more.

''There might be some doubts about the team, but I think he will definitely play because he scored two goals in the previous round, and if he is fit, he will play.

“We saw those qualities with the national team. He is a big physical player who is also technical and has very good movement. That is what makes a very complete striker. And that is why he has done well and performed well. Of course we will need to keep an eye on him as we do in every game.”

That warning proved prophetic. João Pedro was relentless in attack — stretching the PSG defense with his sharp runs, holding up play like a veteran, and ultimately putting the final nail in PSG’s coffin with Chelsea’s third goal just before halftime.

Marquinhos, one of Europe’s most seasoned defenders, had identified the danger. But even he couldn’t stop it.

After the Match: “Chelsea were better than us”

Following the defeat, Marquinhos didn’t mention João Pedro by name again — but his post-match remarks reflected the exact qualities Pedro brought to the game:

"Tactically, they made things difficult for us," Marquinhos said after the match. "We were slow to react. These are things we're going to work on for the future.

"All the teams will be looking at us from now on. It's up to us to be at the top of our game. They won the physical battle. We were a bit below our best. They were very effective with their chances. That changes everything.

"We had chances but we didn't manage to score."

Those words — “they made things difficult” and “won the physical battle” — mirror exactly what João Pedro did all game long. While Palmer’s goals stole the spotlight, Pedro’s physical presence and intelligent movement broke PSG’s defensive rhythm again and again.

For a leader like Marquinhos to openly admit his side were outmuscled, outclassed, and overrun is rare — and it underscores just how impactful João Pedro was on the night.

João Pedro didn’t just score. He imposed himself.

From the moment the match started, he did what Marquinhos feared: he made things difficult.

And in the end, it wasn’t just his goal that hurt PSG — it was his constant pressure and his battle strength.
