Return of a Legend: Thiago Silva set to make shocking return to former European Club.
Veteran defender Thiago Silva is on the verge of a surprise return to European football on a six-month contract, following an impressive showing at the Club World Cup this summer.
Widely considered one of the finest defenders of the century, Silva has amassed 23 major trophies throughout his career.
The Brazilian has represented some of Europe’s most iconic clubs, including AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea.
After the 2023/24 campaign with Chelsea, Silva rejoined Fluminense on a free transfer, where he played a key role in helping the club steer clear of relegation.
The veteran centre-back reminded everyone of his enduring class at last summer’s Club World Cup. Fluminense emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest surprises, knocking out Champions League finalists Inter Milan on their path to the semi-finals.
Although they were eventually eliminated by Silva’s former club — and eventual champions — Chelsea, the tournament once again showcased the defender’s remarkable quality.
Now 41, Silva could be in line for one final spell in European football, with Serie A leaders AC Milan reportedly interested in bringing him back on a short-term deal. The Brazilian previously represented the Rossoneri from 2009 to 2012, winning the Serie A title in the 2010/11 season.
Under Massimiliano Allegri, Milan have enjoyed a strong start to the campaign and currently sit atop the table. Despite conceding only nine goals in 13 matches, the club is still seeking to reinforce its defensive options.
Spanish outlet Fichajes report: "The Milan board values not only his performance on the pitch, but also his impact in the dressing room.
"His leadership, international experience, and ability to guide younger players are factors that carry as much weight as his sporting achievements."
They add that Silva would be an 'emergency signing', bringing experience to the squad for the remainder of the season..
Milan may be out of European competitions this season, but they are still active in the Coppa Italia and remain hopeful of mounting a late title challenge.
According to Fichajes, the move is said to be attractive to Silva as well.
"At his age, he's not looking for a long-term contract," they say.
"But rather the chance to compete at the highest level again and say goodbye to European football in a familiar environment.
"San Siro could be the perfect setting for one last memorable chapter in his career."
Talks are reportedly already underway between the player and the club about a potential return.
Since leaving Milan, Silva has spoken fondly of the club on multiple occasions.
While at PSG in 2018, he told La Gazzetta dello Sport: "Milan belong in my heart and they always will do.
"I'm a huge fan and am following everything which is going on there closely."
