"He'll cost you your job!" Liam Rosenior urged to sell £75,000-a-week Chelsea star after poor display vs Arsenal.
• Pundit Alan Smith has urged Liam Rosenior to drop a Chelsea star after poor performance against Arsenal.
• He believes the Chelsea man is a "bag of nerves" and shouldn't be part of Rosenior's first team.
Alan Smith has criticised Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, labelling him a ‘bag of nerves’ following the Blues’ Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg loss to Arsenal.Sanchez endured a difficult night at Stamford Bridge, making two costly mistakes as Chelsea were beaten 3-2 by their London rivals on Wednesday. His first error came early on, when he failed to properly deal with a routine corner, allowing Ben White to nod the ball into an almost unguarded net after just seven minutes.
Chelsea briefly threatened a comeback when Alejandro Garnacho pulled one back on the hour mark. However, Arsenal quickly restored their two-goal cushion through Martin Zubimendi, a strike for which Sanchez was not held responsible.
Garnacho scored again late in the game, but Chelsea were unable to find an equaliser, leaving them trailing by a single goal ahead of the second leg at the Emirates Stadium.
Smith was highly critical of Sanchez after both of Arsenal’s early goals, questioning the goalkeeper’s composure and authority.
‘That’s incredible, isn’t it?’ Smith said on Sky Sports after White’s opener. ‘How easy is that for Ben White.
‘They didn’t have to do anything particularly special here, Arsenal. Yes the ball was delivered well but Sanchez gets blocked out, quite possibly by his own player.
‘He waves a hand at it and gets nowhere near it. Ben White wasn’t even expecting it, it’s such a soft goal.
‘Chelsea will have had a plan to deal with Arsenal’s set pieces but it’s fallen apart. He looks a bag of nerves, Sanchez, he looks vulnerable. You’ve got to be stronger.’
Smith continued his criticism following Arsenal’s second goal of the night.
‘It’s another goal where the keeper, Sanchez, doesn’t come off favourably.
‘He just takes the weight off it, Sanchez, and puts it perfectly into place of Gyokeres. The ball is like a bar of soap for Sanchez. It’s dreadful.’
