Manchester City have the chance to narrow the gap on Arsenal when they host a manager-less Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium tonight.

After the Gunners’ dramatic 3-2 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday, City now sit seven points behind in the Premier League title race. Their opponents, however, face their own challenges following the sudden exit of Enzo Maresca on New Year’s Day.

Chelsea remain an unknown quantity under Calum McFarlane, their Under-21 boss, who steps into the dugout for the first time in senior football. Going up against Pep Guardiola, it ranks as one of the most lopsided managerial matchups imaginable – though in this unpredictable season, anything could happen.

So who will replace Enzo Maresca permanently? Liam Rosenior is the front-runner after his impressive spell at Strasbourg, another club owned by Todd Boehly and BlueCo. Yet reports suggest Chelsea have also opened discussions with Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

With the Italian gone and a permanent successor yet to be appointed, McFarlane takes charge tonight. Having joined Chelsea from Manchester City last summer, the 33-year-old has never managed a senior team before. No pressure, then.
