HELLO BLUES AND WELCOME TO TODAY'S LIVE MATCH STREAM!
Tonight's match between Chelsea and Leeds at Stamford Bridge starts with the home side in fifth after four successive victories under Liam Rosenior and Leeds in 16th after only two defeats in 12 league games, a run that began with a 3-1 victory over Chelsea under the lights at Elland Road.
Rosenior has made a decent fist of his start as Chelsea’s third manager of the season, winning all four of his league matches, over Brentford, Palace, West Ham and Wolves, after falling to eighth following defeat in the derby by Fulham when Calum McFarlane was picking the side.
They have scored 11 goals in those four victories, four for Cole Palmer, three for Joao Pedro and two for Enzo Fernández which have buoyed their supporters after some rather effete and ponderous attacking performances in the dog days of Enzo Maresca’s time in charge.
In the match at Elland Road, Leeds exploited a very hesitant performance at the back from Tosin Adarabioyo and Robert Sánchez but a torrid first half against West Ham apart, Chelsea look more solid at the back since the change of manager.
Having suffered defeat deep into stoppage time at St James’ Park after being ahead three times, Leeds have beaten Fulham, drawn with Everton and then rolled over Nottingham Forest after being pumped by Arsenal. Tonight they will be without Pascal Struijk, the left-footed centre-half who plays in a three and is crucial to the balance of the formation, and Anton Stach, who also sat out the Forest game.
Daniel Farke said yesterday that Dominic Calvert-Lewin had been ill in the days after scoring his 10th league goal of the season Friday night but should be fit and he may be minded to pair him with his other tall centre-forward, Lucas Nmecha, who started together in that win over this opposition at Elland Road but never before or since.
While Leeds have been in good form at home and have improved away, they have won only once on the road and have not won at Stamford Bridge in eight visits in league and cup since Stephen McPhail scored both goals in 1999. Chelsea’s long-term absentees (for varying reasons – Levi Colwill, Roméo Lavia, Dario Essuho and Mykhailo Mudryk – have now been joined by Jamie Gittens who faces at least six weeks out with a torn hamstring. Tosin is back in training and should be available while Rosenior said he hopes to have Reece James back but that the club captain had been feeling unwell at training yesterday.
